I like Throwback Thursdays because I often find my self looking back in my photo albums at some of the memories that were made. This is me in Jamaica, I was 6 months pregnant with my first born back in 2012. I decided to take a break from my business to care and nurture my child. I knew that this period would give me a tremendous amount of opportunity to really assess where I truly wanted to take my life and my career.       I find though when it comes to reflecting on my days or life in general, I sometimes struggle to do this consistently. I am getting into the habit of reviewing my agenda at the end of the day to see what I was able to actually accomplish vs what I probably will need to get done the next day or days in the future. The growth tip for today focuses on reflection. This is not reflection like the 'Mirror' I talked about in my previous post. This is reflecting on our life to see what lessons we are learning on the way. I often joke that I am a lesson sponge, I really am. I soak up those lessons like my life depends on it, because really...it does! I tend to reflect back on the things that I did and see if there was anything that I could have done different, what were my core lessons learned and what steps could I take to do things differently. Following this mindset, I believe has helped me to really grow as a person both personally and professionally. There was a time in my life that periods of reflection were only done to identify what OTHERS did wrong or didn't do right in my favour. That flawed perspective shifted the responsibility for my personal growth from me unto others. I later learned that no one else but me can affect how my life evolves. I am the one who chooses my experiences, or rather, my responses to my experiences. So what I am sharing is to encourage you to take time to reflect upon your life. Peter Drucker said 'follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.' The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth is one of John's best selling books. To grow as a stellar professional it's important not to forget to develop yourself personally. In this incredible book John shares everything that he has garnered about developing yourself so that you have the best chance of becoming the person you were created to be. What feedback does is it helps people to grow. Rare are those people who are willing to take the risk of letting another person know how they could improve or to celebrate them when they have done something well. A lot of people shy away from difficult conversations or they are not sure of how to give compliments so they just avoid them all together. Here are some quick tips on giving and receiving feedback: RECEIVING 1. Be a gracious recipient and thank the person giving the feedback. Whether positive or negative, feedback, when done appropriately serves to help you to grow. 2. Avoid being defensive: 'Yeah but.." nothing. Be open to listening and absorb the information like a sponge. Your future will thank you for it. Defensiveness comes across as failing to own up to where you may have fell short. If you honestly feel like you have been misunderstood, demonstrate it by improving for the next time. 3. Ask for suggestions on what you could have done differently, if not already provided. This demonstrates that you are eager to act on the feedback that you are receiving. GIVING 1. Start from the position of positive intentions. Recognizing that someone not meeting your expectations does not mean that they are bad or that they are never capable, it just means that they didn't meet your expectations this time. 2. Start with what was good and what went well. People receive feedback better when they know it is coming from a good place. Offer feedback from the position of trying to be helpful. As the recipient how they felt that they could have improved the situation. 3. Be kind with your words and helpful to those you are giving feedback.
